Our Introduction to ESOL Tutoring course has been designed to make skilled ESOL tutoring and support accessible to those who wish to volunteer in ESOL but have no formal qualifications. Our aim is to upskill people who want to contribute to ESOL provision in Scotland,  giving them the confidence, knowledge, and tools they need to support learners effectively.  

The course is not designed to replace Cambridge CELTA or Trinity Cert. TESOL but is best considered a ‘pathway to’ further qualifications, volunteering and potential careers in EFL/ESOL. We understand that people approach ESOL volunteering with very different levels of experience. The tiered structure of the course reflects that variety, offering a clear pathway to ESOL volunteering for anyone that wants to get involved at the appropriate stage for them. 

Tier 1 (The Essentials of Supportive ESOL)

This level is aimed at complete beginners who wish to volunteer as assistants in the ESOL classroom

Tier 2 (Towards ESOL Tutoring)

This level is more specialised and aims to build on the skills learnt in Tier 1. Qualified ESOL/EFL teachers who wish to refresh their skills may also benefit from this level
